Cancer cell ‘executioner’ found

BBC News reports here: Scientists have developed a way of "executing" cancer cells.
Healthy cells have a built-in process which means they commit suicide if something is wrong, a process which fails in cancer cells. The University of Illinois team created a synthetic molecule which caused cancer cells to self-destruct. Cancer experts said the study, in Nature Chemical Biology, offered "exciting possibilities" for new ways of treating the disease.

Cervical cancer vaccine available in Australia

ABC News reports here: The world’s first vaccine for cervical cancer becomes available to Australian women today. The vaccine, called Gardasil, protects against the strains of human papilloma virus that cause 70 per cent of cervical cancers. It is recommended for girls and women aged from 12 to 26. The vaccine is not yet available under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), and it costs $450.

BBC News reports here: A commonly used HIV drug could be used to prevent cervical cancer, UK researchers believe. Early lab tests show the antiviral drug lopinavir attacks the virus that causes cervical cancer – HPV – as well as HIV.

Soft Drink Companies Reach Benzene Deal

The Associated Press reports here at the Washington Post website: Coca-Cola Co. was sued Friday as part of an effort to force soft drink makers to eliminate ingredients in their products that can form cancer-causing benzene. The complaint against the soft drink giant came as two smaller companies settled a lawsuit over benzene, which is linked to leukemia.

Spammers manipulate stock markets

BBC News reports here: Spam messages that tout stocks and shares can have real effects on the markets, a study suggests. E-mails typically promote penny shares in the hope of convincing people to buy into a company to raise its price. People who respond to the "pump and dump" scam can lose 8% of their investment in two days. Conversely, the spammers who buy low-priced stock before sending the e-mails, typically see a return of between 4.9% and 6% when they sell.
