Five Years After 9/11

Spiegel Online writes here: "Nine-Eleven" has entered the English language as a metaphor, an abbreviation even bigger than a millennial milestone: 9/11 broke through Fortress America, turning it into another country. George W. Bush has tried to turn the planet into another world. And failed.

  1. I am an American. I stand for the principles of freedom and justice. Like you..I only want a decent life for me and my family. America is often attacked in the press across Europe and other parts of the world. Many average Americans do not understand your bitterness. When we get up in the morning…we only seek to work hard so that we can have a decent standard of living for us and our children. We are God fearing, compassionate people and the most generous nation on earth. The date 9-11 is more than a metaphor for us. It is a day of national mourning. You call America a ‘fortress’. Almost all of the people murdered on 9/11 were just ordinary Americans…doing what you do…trying to get to work, getting their children off to school, working in an office, taking a flight on a scheduled business trip, etc. Your critisism of our way of life is clearly veiled by your envy of it. Your article implied that 9-11 was Americas comeuppance. That is very insulting. I pray that you never have to live through a 9-11 type event and that you never have to suffer the way our nation did on that terrible morning.
